Benefits You Should Know: Aid & Attendance / Housebound Benefits
Some Veterans and surviving spouses qualify for additional monthly VA benefits when they need help with daily activities, are largely confined to their homes, or meet certain disability requirements.
These benefits are commonly called Aid and Attendance or Housebound.
A few things to know:
• Aid and Attendance can help those who need regular assistance with daily activities like bathing, dressing, eating, or personal care.
• Housebound benefits can apply when a disability substantially limits someone’s ability to leave home. Certain service-connected disability ratings can also qualify Veterans.
• Special Monthly Pension (SMP) provides increased benefits for eligible Veterans and survivors through VA Pension or Survivors Pension.
• Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) provides higher compensation for Veterans meeting certain service-connected disability requirements.
• Surviving spouses receiving DIC can also qualify for additional Aid and Attendance or Housebound benefits.
Don’t assume you aren’t eligible! Even Veterans who receive disability compensation instead of VA Pension should ask about these benefits. Some Veterans who exceed basic pension income limits can also qualify under the higher Aid and Attendance or Housebound limits.
The rules can be confusing, but you don’t have to figure them out alone.
