Benefits You Should Know: Minnesota Veterans Homes
Planning for long-term care is not easy, but Minnesota Veterans and families should know this option exists.
Minnesota has eight State Veterans Homes located in Bemidji, Fergus Falls, Hastings, Luverne, Minneapolis, Montevideo, Preston, and Silver Bay.
A few things to know:
• Services vary by location and can include skilled nursing, memory care, rehabilitation, domiciliary care, recreation, and other support
• Eligible Veterans must meet service and residency requirements
• Some spouses of eligible Veterans can also apply
• Residents contribute to the cost of care based on their means
• Financial rules can differ from other long-term-care programs
Families should research this option early. There can be wait times, and early planning gives families more time to understand admissions, cost of care, and financial rules. Minnesota Veterans Homes may also have a more limited asset lookback than some other long-term-care programs, so it is worth asking questions before assuming a Veteran will not qualify.
Eligibility rules apply. Contact MDVA, a Minnesota Veterans Home, or your County Veterans Service Officer to learn more about admissions, cost of care, and the application process.
