At the March 2015 Minnesota Veterans 4 Veterans Trust Fund monthly meeting, a grant request was approved from the Minnesota Disabled American Veterans for $32,000.00 to aid in the establishment of a DAV MN Northeastern Transportation Program. The money will be used to help purchase 4 different vehicles to expand the access to health services at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center for veterans that have difficulty acquiring transportation in the Northeastern region of Minnesota. This collaborative program will involve five counties; Cook, Lake, St. Louis, Koochiching and Carlton. The locations of the vehicles will be in Grand Marias, Virginia and Duluth areas.
The DAV MN Northwestern program implemented last year and this year the DAV MN Northeastern program are now providing veterans in rural communities the means and way to receive the care they need at no cost to them, explained Stephen Whitehead, DAV of Minnesota Adjutant and Executive Director. Mr. Whitehead went on to say “On a Statewide basis, the DAV of Minnesota in partnership with the Minnesota counties, provided in 2014, transportation to over 18,000 veterans, over 1.1 million miles, thanks to volunteer drivers who have contributed over 53,000 volunteer hours providing this service.” “This effort is truly improving the quality of life for many veterans and their families and provides the DAV of Minnesota a great opportunity to act on its purpose of fulfilling the promises they have made to those men and women who have served our Country.”
