DAV National Commander and National Adjutant Visit Minnesota
St. Paul MN: DAV National Commander Joe Johnston and National Adjutant Marc Burgess visited Minnesota May 15th thru 19th, meeting with local DAV leadership and attending the DAVs Old Glory Run / Walk held in Cold Spring MN on May 17th.
State Adjutant Stephen Whitehead stated, “We were quite honored to have Commander Johnston and Adjutant Burgess spend time with us, and they had the opportunity to see the success of MN DAV first hand”.
Upon arrival they toured MN DAV HQs, met with DVA Commissioner Larry Shellito who praised MN DAV transportation and the role it plays in the quality of life of veterans throughout MN. Over the next several days they toured the Minneapolis and St. Cloud VA Medical Centers as well as the Minneapolis Veterans Home. They took time to meet with our transportation program volunteer drivers as well as see our newly purchased bus for the Minneapolis Veterans Home Adult Day Care facility. They also met with the directors of all three facilities.
On Saturday May 17th they attended and participated in our 6th annual OLD GLORY RUN/WALK in Cold Spring, MN. Over 1000 participants were on hand on a very bright and beautiful day and the event was a tremendous success. While in Cold Spring they were treated to a tour of the Third Street Brew house / Brewery, a business that has been a very strong supporter of the MN DAV.
After the Old Glory event Commander Dave Valtinson took them to Camp Ripley where they observed military training in action as well as an update on our hunting / fishing programs held there annually.
State Commander Dave Valtinson, who escorted the visitors over the four days commented “it was exciting to show them the “magic” we have going here in MN, and also to receive the accolades they provided as they seen our programs and program results.”
Upon leaving to return to Cincinnati National Adjutant Burgess praised MN DAV Chapter and Department leadership, our fundraising enterprises, and the funds raised from those enterprises being applied to strong and effective programs serving veterans. He stated “your statewide communities are well aware of your service to veterans programs and the positive impact they bring to the table… and as a result of that you have been extremely successful in membership recruiting”.
