Another well know community wide event is the annual DAV & Auxiliary sponsored free Thanksgiving dinner for hundreds of Hutchinson area residents that cannot afford a thanksgiving dinner. In 2014 marked the 20th anniversary of this “DAV & Aux Goodwill” thanksgiving dinner to thank the community for their cash and cloths donations.
Pictured above are over are just a few of the 326 families that could not afford a thanksgiving dinner and enjoyed the free meal of turkey and all the fixings, including pie. A cadre of volunteers served up these meals. The meals were also available for delivery to shut-ins.
These Chapter 37 sponsored events and many others are made possible by donations and the sale of used clothing, shoes and other miscellaneous items collected at the twenty six green DAV MN clothing bins located in McLeod, Meeker and Renville counties. Around 9,000 pounds of clothes are taken from these bins each week by volunteers, packed in a large trailer and hauled by volunteers to the Twin Cities area where they are sold by the pound. The Chapter Auxiliary receives a donation for every 4th drop to support some of their programs. In addition, local businesses sponsor clothing drives coordinated by the Chapter and Auxiliary volunteers.
All of the community wide services offered to our veterans, family members, and their neighbors are successful because of the hard work of the many men and women volunteers in our Chapter. The chapter feels that it is important to keep the public informed on how their cash donations and clothing donations are used, explained Van Karg, Chapter 37 Adjutant.
