This week, DAV members from across the nation gathered in Washington D.C. for this year’s 2016 DAV Mid-Winter Conference. The DAV of MN along with local chapters supported 13 delegates to attend the event and to visit with our State Congressman and Senators on the DAV’s key legislative topics. This year’s key legislative topics included caregiver support for all veterans, closing the gaps in services to female veterans, the claims and appeals backlogs, and creating a fully developed appeals pilot program. Our members also attended DAV’s Mid-Winter Convention events which included visits from Deputy Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Sloan Gibson, the VA Under Secretary for Health, and the VA under Secretary for benefits all came by to brief members on current progress on VA programs, services, practices. Then the delegates took to the capitol for National Commander Moses McIntosh’s testimony to the joint House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committee. On Wednesday, the DAV of MN Delegates held their 4th annual Member’s Breakfast, inviting all Senators and Representatives to stop by and hear the national priorities of the DAV. The DAV of MN met with 8 of the 10 of the MN Delegation, and held individual office meetings with the offices of legislators that weren’t able to attend the breakfast, as well as individual meetings with other key legislator’s staff.
