DAV of Minnesota Wright County Transportation Program Implemented

The Disabled American Veterans of Minnesota strives to provide Minnesota veterans in need with transportation to VA Medical Center appointments through their DAV of MN Volunteer Transportation Program. At the March 10, 2015 meeting of the Wright County Board, Veterans Services Officer Launette Figliuzzi came before the board with a proposal to provide transportation to the St. Cloud V.A. Hospital – the nearest veteran hospital to Wright County.

With the donation of a 12-passenger Ford Flex DAV Van by the DAV of Minnesota Department and commitment to coordinate a manifest of transportation schedules and volunteer drivers in Wright County, the proposal was approved.
The implementation of a transportation program for our veterans in Wright County complements our ongoing initiative to meet the demands and needs of our veterans throughout the state of Minnesota, explained Stephen Whitehead, DAV of Minnesota Adjutant and Executive Director. Mr. Whitehead went on to say “We know we have a large number of Veterans in Wright County who can use a ride to the VA Medical Center in St. Cloud.”  “Through this program, our veterans in Wright County will to be able to use the benefits their service has earned.”

Our van drivers are all volunteers and are certified by passing a medical and driving examination. The DAV is always looking for volunteer drivers and you don’t have to be a veteran in order to drive, explained, Trent Dilks, St Cloud VA Medical Center transportation coordinator.  Mr. Dilks went on to say “To schedule a ride, veterans should call as early as possible to ensure room is available for transportation to their medical appointment.”  “The van will be housed at the Buffalo MN Public Works Department Building. Initially, the plan is to run the van routes two days a week, Tuesdays and Thursdays.”
