On July 13th, 2015, Jim Fountaine, Commander of St. Cloud DAV Chapter 9, was presented a “Challenge” coin at their monthly chapter meeting held at the American Legion, Waite Park. Each of the Beyond The Yellow Ribbon Networks in Minnesota are allotted “Challenge” coins which may be awarded to a single individual, an individual representing a group, or organizations who have distinguished themselves in supporting the local Yellow Ribbon Network’s mission to support, honor and recognize service members, veterans and military families.
Within the military, the significance of the military coin is:
- Military coins are used to memorialize a unit or service, to commemorate special events or operations, to recognize participation or achievement, and to identify unit members or senior officials.
- The distribution of military coins enhances comradeship, improves morale, and builds cohesion
- Military coins distributed by leaders are considered high praise and of the highest recognition by a leader
- Military coins are special recognition for a job well done and are seen as the highest form of appreciation and acknowledgment of support
Jim Fountaine has gone over and above to further the cause and mission of Minnesota’s Beyond the Yellow Ribbon Program explained Anita Harris Herring Coordinator Central Minnesota Warrior to Citizen – Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. She went on to say. “In addition to the “Challenge” coin, a certificate of appreciation was handed out to the DAV membership in recognition for their support and partnership with the Central Minnesota Warrior to Citizen – Beyond the Yellow Ribbon. There has been awesome collaboration between the DAV and with us as we team up to assist service members, military families and Veterans with items they need for their home, apartment, or immediate needs that arise. Jim and the Chapter 9 DAV members are very deserving of this honor.”
